barbies PLAYHOUSE

I have a theory that however you treated your Barbie dolls as a kid was a good indication of how you were going to dress and act like later in life. Now of course, this isn't true for everyone, if you were one of those people who thought that Barbies were a symbol of everything not to be in life and you'd fling them against the wall, cut all their hair off or melt their plastic limbs in your Easy Bake Oven... well, I highly doubt you've become a head shaving arsonist.

In my case,  the fact that I spent a good amount of time brushing my Barbie doll's long blonde hair and always made sure her wardrobe was the enviable of all my friends on our play dates and of course, filled with lots of pink, sequined little clothes is something that tells a lot about me now. Most importantly, it explains a lot of my own pink/sequined items in my closet. Looking back on it, although Barbie's wardrobe looked much like Pepto Bismul had exploded all over a Vegas dancer's clothes, as a kid, I loved it and often times, still do.

Something about fashion has always brought out the little kid in me and usually, it's the side that wants to be just like Barbie. When that side of me takes over, I can't help but want to make everything I buy sparkle and shine like it did after I got my first Bedazzler. So, when that glitter hungry five year old comes out, this is what I feed her,

EXPRESS SEQUIN MINI SKIRT $49.50

SEARS PLATFORM SHOE $68.45
BUCKLE SEQUIN BLAZER $59.50
FREDERICKS OF HOLLYWOOD SEQUIN DRESS $64

BEST FIND:
ETSY VINTAGE SEQUIN BUTTERFLY TOP $55

My advice, a  fair warning, when done incorrectly, sequins don't just go wrong, they go very wrong. So proceed with caution and stick with one sequined piece at a time in order to not over do it. Although the inspiration behind sequins is juvenile, it doesn't mean there is anything less sexy about them when done right. Nothing goes better with sequins than skin so don't wear tights and keep the jewelry on the minimal. And hey, if wearing sequins makes you still think of five year olds playing dress up or Vegas show girls than there's no shame in feeling risky for using some shimmery body lotion and leaving it at that, this is just for those of us who want to get in touch with our inner Barbie girl.
